She returned to the high school just in time for her afternoon lesson at two, then back to her flat for a quick cup of tea and to change for the evening. She needed to prepare for her lessons tomorrow but would get up early and do it then.

Despondently, she looked at the contents of her wardrobe. Downsizing from the home she’d shared with her husband had given her the perfect opportunity to declutter, and she had done just that. Except for her wardrobe, which was still in a bit of a mess; she had too many clothes she hardly ever wore.

It had also been ages since she’d been for a night out which didn’t involve family in one way or another, but this was an-almost-but-not-quite-date, and she wanted to look good for both Rafi and David. The question was what to wear for a night out in Tivoli Gardens in October, which would be mainly outdoors.

Once, she’d read a book about the different ways of dressing amongst women in several parts of Europe, as well as North America. According to the author, Scandinavian women were ‘a colourful lot’, but in winter you ‘hardly ever saw their legs’.

‘Because it’s too damned cold, dear author,’ she muttered and selected a knee-length black velvet skirt and a pistachio-green oversized jumper with slits on the hem like an upside-down crenellated tower.

She finished it with a matching woollen scarf, black gloves, and a pair of stupidly expensive silver brogues she’d bought on a whim. The aim was to appear both hip and feminine – showing my legs (in tights), hah! – and be warm as well.

‘Oh, God,’ she groaned as she took one final look in the mirror, but it was too late to change again.
